My computer won't start !!

……. or maybe it starts, and then stops, or makes strange noises, or runs very slowly and takes an age to do anything.   Sound familiar?  To help you understand why some of these things happen, and also what to do about it, here is our guide to some of the most common problems:

Computer won't start
  • Switch everything off at the socket.
  • Check the plug fuses
  • Make sure all leads and cables are secure.
  • Check your power supply is plugged in correctly and switch on again.
Computer spontaneously re-starts
  • More than likely a hardware problem (power supply, processor, memory etc).
  • Other causes can be viruses, worms and Trojans
  • You really need expert help
Computer locks up, freezes, blue screens
  • Hardware or driver faults, spyware, inadequate or defective memory, missing or corrupted files, viruses, Trojans etc.
  • Around 80% of the time the problem can be resolved by having your machine serviced.
Computer makes noises
  • Typically due to a fault with a moving part, e.g. the hard drive or a fan.
  • You should shut down the machine and have it checked immediately.
Computer is very slow
  • Usually caused by 2 or more factors, e.g. too many programs auto-starting, adware and spyware running in the background, inadequate memory.
  • A service (and maybe a memory upgrade) should be all that's needed.

Can't get on the Internet
  • A number of suggestions - Internet Service provider problem, telephone line problem, faulty broadband hardware or viruses.
  • Try switching off the router or modem, check all leads and cables are secure and power supply is plugged in correctly, and start again.  If that doesn’t work, consider having a service.
